Abrasive Solutions: Biodegradable Coolants from Saint-Gobain

Coolants are fluids that mitigate heat buildup in a process. These can be used in cutting, grinding and forming of materials, including metals, plastics and ceramics.  These fluids work by carrying heat away from the work zone and by preventing heat generation via lubrication. Additional additives, such as corrosion inhibitors, dispersants, preservatives, surfactants, colorants or fragrances may also be incorporated into these fluids.

Coolants in Abrasive Solutions

Using coolants in abrasive operations, such as with a grinding wheel, significantly improves the quality, consistency, and performance of the abrasive product. The coolant is a vital element of the grinding process, not only improving the quality of the workpiece, but also improving the life of the abrasive by reducing heat, removing grinding debris and preventing glazing of the abrasive.

Coolants

There are four types of coolants, synthetic, semi-synthetic, soluble oil, and oil based which are most often employed in grinding, cutting and other shaping applications. In general, petroleum-based coolants offer more lubricity and resistance to bio contamination than synthetics.  However, synthetic coolants impart faster cut rates, offer improved cooling, are easier to clean, and can be tailored to individual processes more effectively than petroleum-based coolants.

Biodegradable Coolants from Saint-Gobain

Saint-Gobain supplies biodegradable coolants which are designed to increase efficiency by decreasing machine time and improving the working life of tools. These biodegradable coolants are used in processes such as sawing, slicing, grinding, honing, lapping, and polishing.

AmberCut

AmberCut™ 383B. is a completely synthetic, non-toxic, biodegradable coolant from Saint-Gobain, which contains extreme pressure additives. It combines chemistries that are resistant to biological growth for maximum sump life, reducing overall cost of ownership. This extremely effective formula is comprised of a powerful corrosion inhibition package which protects against galvanic metal corrosion. This water dilutable coolant can be used for general machining for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals as well as ceramics and composites.

Additionally, AmberCut™ 383B offers enhanced workpiece surface finishes and extends tool life. Upon dilution with water It forms a clear, non-milky, working solution, improving visibility of the workpiece for easier use, and can be easily microfiltered to remove contaminants from the sump.

AmberSlice

AmberSlice™ 202A: Synthetic Slicing / Grinding Coolant

AmberSlice™ 202A is a completely synthetic, water soluble coolant formulated for slicing and grinding. This unique formula contains very low levels of anion and cation contaminants such as chloride, fluoride, nitrate, phosphate, calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium, making it excellent for use in highly technical applications. AmberSlice 202A also combines a special corrosion protection package with a broad spectrum biocide to provide outstanding system protection. Recommended uses include ID sawing and edge grinding of silicon wafers and other ceramic materials.

Recommended Process Parameters

AmberCut™ 383B should be diluted to 6-20%, depending on the severity of the machining operation.  It can be used effectively with deionized, soft or filtered hard water.

AmberSlice™ 202A should be diluted with deionized water to a concentration of 0.1% to 3.0% for slicing and 0.1% to 1.0% for grinding.
